Safe Garage Door Openers

Nowadays you can be confident that the garage door opener you buy will be very safe. In the past this was not always the case. Because kids love to play with the openers, there were lots of accidents involving children getting hurt. Because of this manufacturers were forced to impliment stricter safety measures.

The government also had a lot to do with the implementation of the safety features in use today. All garage door openers on the market today have a safety feature that will reopen the garage door when it hits an object while opening or closing. In 1993 laws came into effect that require all garage door openers to have photoelectric and pressure-related sensors. These sensor will prevent the door from closing all the way when they hit something.

The photoelectric sensors contain electric eyes on both sides of the door about six inches from the ground. If anything crosses the path of these eyes while the door is closing, the eyes will stop the operation. With the pressure related sensors, the door has to hit something before it stops. The problem is that the weight of garage doors hitting a small child can still cause a lot of injuries. Although garage door openers have been greatly improved, owners should still make sure that there are no small children playing in the area when they are opening and closing their garage doors.

The sensors will usually keep working as long as the door is in good condition. Garage doors need to be checked often and have to be kept lubricated. The manual of most doors will usually have detailed instructions on how to perform maintenance procedures. You will have to regularly check both the door itself as well as the torion springs.

You should also remember never to leave your garage door opener remote lying around. It is like the key to your house.
