Shag Rugs - Which Type to Use?

Everyone needs a rug and in some cases one of the classics just won’t do. We bring you the shag rug, a floor covering that has been in vogue since the pop-art period of the 60’s and 70’s and one that seems as if it is here to stay.

Shag rugs are made from cotton, nylon, polypropylene or acrylic materials in knotted style. The knots can be short, long or both.

Flokati is one kind of shag rug, which was originally used as a clothing material in ancient Greece, especially made for outdoor wear. Flokati is one of the most sought-after rugs and is made from 100% wool material. It says it all, doesn’t it? A soft, cushiony rug to soothe your tired feet. It makes you think of a cozy rainy afternoon, warm and relaxed while sipping hot chocolate.

One thing we have as yet neglected to mention is that Flokati rugs are made with the wool from sheep that call either New Zealand or Greece their home. Our next rug we will be looking at is the Aros rug which, like the Flokati, is made from the wool of sheep in New Zealand. As such, its texture is as soft as the Flokati but has its own unique appearance and manufacturing technique.

Next on the list we have Love Fur. Quite simply, imagine a rug made out of faux fur and you’d be close. This rug is made out of acrylic which, when it comes to money, means that it’s much more affordable in comparison to other types of rugs.

Following the acrylic-made, cheap rug is the more expensive one called the leather shag rug, which is usually from cowhide or suede, or a combination of both materials. This kind of shag rug is in style for the elite class and members of the hip-hop world I bet are included.

And last in the list of quality shag rugs is one that’s also known as the “Shaggy” rug due to its appearance. It’s more formally known as the Cotton Jersey shag rug and is made from short, thick strands which means that its appearance comes across as much more dense. Not only are these rugs comfortable to walk on or sit on, but it’s one everyone just enjoys being around, perhaps due to its coziness. As such this makes the ideal rug for both, young and old as well as the rebellious at heart.

So as you can see, there is a rug for everyone out there. If you’re having trouble choosing, then it would be better to look at the rest of the furniture you may have and see which of the colors and/or textures will match best.
