The Writing Desk: Crucial Office Furniture

by Henry J. Adams

If you measure by longevity, you’ll be really hard pressed to find a piece of modern furniture that still stands up like the writing desk. Over the last several centuries the designs and styles might have changed drastically, but there are few bits of office furniture that are nearly as important as the writing desk still is. No place of work is complete without one.

In the old days writing desks were often used as a status symbol to show a level of wealth, education, or sophistication. Used for writing and storing correspondence, this particular bit of furniture was seen as a “gentleman’s” possession. While there are still some very elegant designs among certain types of writing desks, these are no longer seen as an upper class or aristocratic decoration.

Contemporary designs of writing desks absolutely have to be functional. Changes in technology and the advancement in computers have changed the designs of this type of furniture dramatically. Any style has to be able to function really well with computers, which pretty much eliminates roll tops or hutches. Because of the needs of the modern office, often times writing, computer, and office desks are often considered the same.

Opinions differ on what makes for the most effective model. Obviously any modern desk is going to have to be able to house a computer easily while still offering ample space. This is going to eliminate any old design with a roll top. Many employers and employees prefer L-shaped desks to take advantage of corners, but others like a more traditional design.

One thing that’s for sure: you’re not going to find an office without a writing desk. Some are designed to hold more files in drawers while others are designed to have the most open space on top. But no matter how that particular model is designed, it’s going to function in any office setting.

Office furniture has changed enormously from the past. Between the economy, times, and changing technology, a lot has influenced the design of modern office desks.

Writing desks have changed repeatedly over the years with styles and designs shifting based on need and technology. While it’s impossible to predict how they will change next, it’s a safe bet that these versatile bits of furniture will still be around for years to come.

As long as there is a need to write, to type, or to have a place to work with a computer then writing desks are a safe bet to continue to be viewed as important office furniture. As anyone who has ever worked without one can tell you: a good office desk can make all the difference.
