The Many Functions of Futon Beds

by Ali Mulyadi

Futon beds are traditionally a Japanese invention. They have since become popular all across the globe thanks to their dual uses. Because of its popularity it has become something of a household name. You can even buy them on shopping channels or on online web stores.

A Brief Background of the Futon Beds

As we said before futons originate from Japan. The traditional futon consists of a padded mattress and a slatted base. The mattress and covers should be easy enough to store away for day use yet comfortable enough to use as seating. These can be folded away during the day as seating and pulled out for a bed at night.

A newer futon (one that you may find in America or the UK) is loosely based on the Japanese original. The mattresses are put on a wooden or metal base and laid flat for a good nights sleep. It is then folded up through the day for use as seating. The seating can be used as an occasional seat or as an everyday sofa.

Different Features of Futon Beds

The mattresses that are usually placed on the futon bases are often made from several layers of foam and padding. This makes them much larger and thicker than the Japanese alternative but also makes them more comfortable. They are also cheaper.

You can also buy futon covers for the mattresses. This makes it easier to clean them and change the style. They are easily removable. You can always make your own futon covers as the mattresses are 5cm thick.

Futon beds are called futon-ya in Japan and are mainly sold in specialist stores. You can buy sets in these stores which consist of a futon base, mattress, pillow, and blanket. These futons come in single, semi-double and double. You can choose a large range of colors or buy a cover to change the color of your futon mattress.

Futon beds are designed to be placed on the floors, and are traditionally folded away and stored in a closet during the day to allow the floor to breathe and to allow for flexibility in the use of the room.

In order to maintain your futon you should air it regularly in sunlight and if at all possible invest in a futon beater (these look like rug beaters and are made from bamboo). This is essential for keeping your futon beds in tip top condition.
