The Beauty and Appeal of Persian Rugs

by Charlene Wilson

Area rugs are the best decors to complement any style. The different kinds of rugs enhance similarly different themes from traditional to contemporary homes.

Rugs today are also pieces of art, and none come finer than Oriental Rugs, especially Persian ones. Persian style rugs, the authentic ones, are hand woven and generally made from either wool (mostly camel wool), silk or cotton. Rugs made on a machine are not considered to be authentic, even if made in the place of origin of Oriental rugs, such as India, Pakistan, China, Iran or Turkey.

Persian rugs are the most popular kind of Oriental rugs.

What makes a rug an authentic Persian one? It depends upon the location in which it was made. If a rug is woven in, what today is known as Iran, then it qualifies as being a Persian rug. These Persian rugs are beautiful and intricate works of art and because of the handmade skills involved in making tem, they are a large source of income for the local Iranian rug weavers.

Used as works of art, many Persian rugs find their way into homes as wall art. This is especially true of rugs that have been woven from silk. By nature they are more fragile (as well as being more expensive), so people by them to use as focal points in the decor, by hanging them instead of using them on the floor. Something as special as a silk Persian, hardly feels right to be walking over.

Persian rugs are a familiar sight in auctions, items with a valuable history. Most Persian rugs are considered family heirlooms, which only stamps their value to many homeowners and rug enthusiasts.

The style of Persian rugs is largely based around woven patterns of a circular nature, a pattern (perhaps a flower or animal) that fills the entire area of the rug, or ones that are filled with symbolic motifs. Because rugs are hand woven, there is a certain artistic freedom that goes into making them. Many of the rugs have that personal touch in them, and it is more than likely that a Persian rug you buy will be unique. This all adds to the appeal of the items.

Just imagine then how a Persian rug can enhance one’s home. The vivid colors, hand-woven details, artistry and elegance of this rug will certainly make any room stand out.

Consider seeking out a Persian rug if it will fit in to the budget of your design. A good authentic rug will last a lifetime and beyond and can easily become a valuable family heirloom.
