Proper lighting is also very essential for safety and security purpose and you can easily achieve it by putting in a little time and effort.
Portable lights are widely used in homes these days. Their biggest advantage is that these are movable plug-in fixtures and can be moved to any place according to the need.
Lamps are the most common examples of portable lights. Table lamps are used for various purposes like for reading, illuminating dark corners of a room etc. Desk lamps are specifically designed to be used at work places. They are good at lighting up small areas brightly. Generally, the light source is placed about 15 inches above the desk.
Armed Lamps have movable arms to direct light where needed. They mount directly to a wall and can be hard-wired or plugged in and some offer decorative cord covers to match its finish. These types of lamps make great alternatives to bedside table lamps without taking up space.
Floor lamps work as task lighting which can be used to perform the intended task like reading, sewing etc. These lights should be glare free. They are also used to light up the dark corners of a room. They will look good beside a sofa or a chair.
Torcheries are another kind of floor lamps which direct the light upwards. They are mostly used in corners of a room or in a room with high ceilings.
You should be very careful while selecting the lamp shade. It controls the level and direction of light. Go for a bright colored shade for task lighting as it will not allow the light to scatter and will keep it focus at one particular area so that the task can be performed easily.
Placement of the lights is very important. The source of light should not be placed behind the persons head so as to avoid shadows on the book or magazine.
