When you think of area rugs, what initially comes to mind? For many people, it’s the old, worn rug under Gramma’s ancient sofa. But for those that know design and decorating, an area rug is a terrific way to express yourself within a room. There are many different types of materials used to create these rugs, as well as different colors, shapes, and styles. Here are some of the most common area rugs features and how they can help you perfectly accent a room in your home.

Material Choices- Wool is one of the most common fibers used to create area rugs. It’s very durable, holds color well, and is available in virtually any shape and style. A wool area rug should be used in a room that has heavy foot traffic, as it will hold up well. You may also want to include a wool runner down a hallway for the same reason. Some of the other popular materials for area rugs are synthetic fibers, bamboo, sisal, and even cotton. Bamboo and cotton area rugs are often a great choice for an enclosed patio.

Size Choices- Area rugs are available in just about any size you can think of. Some are very small and are used only as an accent piece. Others are used instead of carpet and can easily cover most of the area of the floor. The most important thing is to measure, then measure again. You can also layout newspaper sheets covering the area where you want to place the area rug and measure around them. This will give you a terrific place to start when you are searching for an area rug that will compliment your room.

Style Choices- When it comes to the different design options, the sky is the limit! Choose from traditional Oriental or Turkish designs, which are elaborate and elegant. You may want to consider a solid color for a room that has many other decorations. An area rug should contain the one color that is in the room’s color scheme. This is not saying the area rug should only emphasize that one color, but when you include it in the area rug’s colors, it will bring the entire room together.

Shapes of these area rugs come in any kind of geometric shape you can imagine. Want to be different in your choice of an area rug get an odd shaped rug and place it into your room. Try different shapes in different rooms for a bit of pizzazz.

With the addition of a nice area rug into any room you will find that your room will look much better. So get out and see what area rugs look like now and chose some for your rooms!
