Feng Shui Basics For Home Interior Design

by Sue Krippner

Decorating your home using feng shui basics creates a beautiful and balanced environment that promotes health, happiness, wealth, love, warmth, peace of mind and success. When redesigning a room, item placement is important, as are wall color, the shape of items, and the accessories placed around your home.

The definition of feng shui is wind and water. It is an ancient Chinese system that combines the laws of heaven and earth to improve life by surrounding yourself with positive energy. In interior decorating, it refers to the use and placement of objects and materials to create a harmonious flow of life energy. As such, the design of each room should be based on the people who use it the most.

There are several tools in feng shui. Among them are the feng shui compass and the Ba-Gua, which is an octagonal grid that identifies the five main elements of feng shui. Use this energy map to define the areas of your home and how they connect to the well-being of your life.

You can mingle balance and harmony by practicing the ancient art of feng shui. The five elements of wood, water, fire, metal and the earth comprise the feng shui basics. These elements balance energy, and turn your house into a home.

Your energy map, or ba-Gua dictates that you need to improve certain elements to achieve your feng shui basics. for example, you could add clocks, mirrors, crystals, water fountains or a new color scheme. Pay attention to the direction in which your rooms face, as this is a key factor in determining which of the important five elements to be installed to achieve balance.

Energy is the most important of all feng shui basics. There are two types, Sheng Chi, which is positive energy and Sha Chi, which is negative energy. Within your home, you want to attract positive energy by creating an organized, bright and airy environment. This can be achieved by bringing in fresh flowers or plants, adding accent lighting in dark areas of a room or hallway, and opening windows or using air purifiers to ensure a healthy airflow.

Among the essential feng shui basics is removing clutter. Positive energy needs to flow throughout the house to create a healthy environment. But it is unable to do so if it is blocked by clutter. Rooms that have too many items in them or have messy unorganized areas attract negative energy, which can lead to feelings of confusion and depression.

The three important rooms in your house, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen are important areas when it comes to your feng shui basics. Toilet seats need to be kept down and doors close in bathrooms, whilst beds and other furniture need to be positioned correctly in your bedrooms. An open, bright design in the kitchen is an important practice to consider if creating a harmonious home.
