Creating A Modern-Style Home
If we were to describe modern home design, what words should we use to characterize it? Do the descriptions “minimalist, functional, straight, monochromatic, clean, chic, sleek and basic” ring a bell?
This is actually good. Utilizing items that serve a purpose rather than using things that only eat up space and collect dust. We live in a fast-paced time. Even household chores should be on a turbo speed to attend to other tasks. Cleaning unnecessary stuff is a waste of precious seconds. The minimalist approach, glass, steel, concrete and simple colors make maintenance a lot easier.
Monochromatic or monotones is no strange word to modern design. The usual colors are black, white, gray and beige. Although a splash of bright and deep colors are seen such as in trimming or base of the walls, as blotches to make an abstract design or in some other painting technique, it is minimal. The space is still dominated by the basic colors.
Flooring is almost always made of concrete or wood, and rarely is there anything unusual here if you’re trying to go for the Modern aesthetic. Although you have about the same color choices for the floor as the walls, you’ll have an easier time handling a light-colored floor because it’ll be easier to get furniture and accent pieces for it.
Area rugs enjoy many exceptions to the rules of the Modern style. It’s one of the few items where you have a wide range of choices in terms of texture and color. An area rug gives you the chance to add a homier feel to a sterile space, so make the most out of it. Unusually shaped, brightly-colored and richly textured rugs are the best for the Modern look - the more it stands out, the better!
Adding warmth to a modern-themed dwelling is by no means impossible. It’s still a home after all and creating an ambiance of comfort and geniality is still important. You don’t want to go home to a museum. It’s a home. You can do this by using personal items like photographs and artworks. Area rugs are also great additions. In fact, you can add more colors and designs in your choice of area rugs. If you’re hesitant to use vivid colors in your walls and floors, then you can do so with your area rugs.
Initially, the Modern style could easily look very impersonal, cold and uninviting. With the right design touches, however, a Modern-themed space could look about as welcoming and cozy as any other. It’s all just a matter of knowing the basic beliefs of Modern design, and putting in a few balanced touches along the way.
