Simple Do-It-Yourself Feng Shui For Your Home

by Constance Sanders

Feng Shui is not a foreign term for many, especially those who are keen on home decorating. Contrary to what others perceive of Feng Shui as a fortune-telling practice, Feng Shui is actually somewhat like the field of interior design, but very ancient. It has been practiced for thousands of years. It uses Chinese principles in home decorating, particularly on how to arrange objects. Feng Shui focuses on chi, energy from every object existing around us. The purpose of Feng Shui is to choose and arrange the objects that give off chi and allow this energy to flow.

Feng Shui has survived for centuries. In this modern time, more and more people are becoming interested with this practice.

True feng shui will deal with very tiny details to help a person learn more about chi and the way it flows. To truly practice feng shui in a home, a person should either spend their time making a professional study out of it or they should hire a professional feng shui decorator. Neither of these options is always possible, however, often leaving a person to practice feng shui on their own. Thankfully, when applying oneself to the most basic principles of feng shui, they can make a lasting effect in their living space.

On the other hand, using Feng Shui in simple ways is possible. The most basic thing to do is to listen to your instincts. It’s nothing new given that we hear this all the time. Nevertheless, it works. You will feel if something is not right, and that is energy pulling at you. If you feel comfortable in a room, then the flow of energy is going the right way.

Certain objects affect the flow of chi and one important item is the area rug. This decor has such a huge impact on the over-all look of the room that its color, texture and placement can affect the flow of energy. Is the color too loud? Is the rug’s texture too thin from preventing cold from the floor, therefore causing much discomfort? Does the rug look off from where it is placed?

One must not be afraid to make mistakes as well. Making mistakes will be the only thing which accurately teaches a person how to perform great feng shui. Through trial and error, one will begin to learn techniques which make them and their guests feel comfortable. Mistakes will be the driving force for fixing the problem and making the room work right. Attention to chi will only grow and one’s feng shui skills will blossom.
