How to Develop Your Individual Decorating Style

by Lucas Fernly

Walking into someone’s house you look at how the home is decorated, if it’s beautiful you will think they have a great style. While people do envy interior decorators flair, they often overlook the fact that they could easily put their own unique touch to the room. Creativity will add a nice touch and style that no one else could create.

Developing your own sense of personal style for decorating isn’t that difficult. You just need to remember that individual style will vary person to person. When designing a room in your home, make sure it’s the style and things you like not what others would enjoy. If you think about it, you’ve been dressing yourself for a number of years and for that you should have some type of personal style. If you can’t figure out which type of textures or colors to choose for your room design, look in your closet and see what sticks out to you in your own clothes. Many of your own personal clothing will give you clues on how to design the room you chose.

Before you begin decorating your room, take a look in your closet. Go through your wardrobe and pull out your favourite pieces. Don’t overanalyze each item. Just take a quick peak in the closet and pull out the items that immediately catch your eye. Spread them out and look at what you have chosen. Why do you like these pieces? Is it the color? Is it the texture of the fabric? Is it the way it is cut, so that it drapes over you when you wear it? As you discover the colors and textures you are naturally drawn to, you will get some great ideas for styling your home according to your personal preferences.

If you are someone whom is into silk clothing then you’ll mostly lean towards satin bedding or silky dcor pillows. If you are someone who loves your jeans then you’ll be more drawn to textures for your rooms which are more towards suede or even upholstered furniture. You don’t have to consider just one texture to your room dcor. It can be mixed and matched as long as it stays with in the color theme. If mixing textures in the room you’ll notice it will add point of interest and break the room up a little bit.

As you figure out your own personal style, don’t be scared to add a few accessories you necessarily wouldn’t choose. This will make your room bolder and also more exciting to guests and yourself. A beautiful vase or even a great picture will accent the room perfectly. If you don’t think it would go well with your room dcor, why not try it out and see if it works. Having something unique in a room will catch the eye and sometimes look great.

Make sure to add your own personal touch throughout the room. As you notice you can always accessorize the walls and tables with pictures, flowers, and even knickknacks, you can accessorize your floor as well. Try picking a great accent rug with the colors which are in the room style choice. No matter your floor size you’ll be able to find a rug which will fit perfectly in your space. Just take a mental note that many people will look at the floor before they look at the wall when entering a room. If you are decorating a larger room a rug is a great accent to break up the open area.

Rugs look particularly striking in rooms with hardwood floors. They soften the overall effect, while adding another layer of color and texture. Choose a rug that you love and incorporate it into your room in a highly travelled area to get maximum impact.

Above all, have fun as you develop your own personal decorating style. Experiment with different colors and textures until you come up with something you like. This is your home, so decide what you like and use it. Personal style is all about designing a space to meet your needs and make you happy. Ultimately, you will find that your personal style will develop over time as you choose hallmark colors, fabrics, or accent pieces to define who you are in your space.
