Decorating With Rugs

by Ariel Barnett

Rugs can divide the room’s space visually into areas or functions. The dining, living and bedroom areas may be designated by rugs placed judiciously in a large room. The various elements of the room can be unified by a large rug, or by a common pattern, color or design in the various rugs used. Rugs with patterns can be more easily harmonized with the other room elements than those with solid colors.

Each room should have its own distinct look and feel. In home dcor, opposites attract. For example, floral designs go great with solid colors that are stable. Use small patterns to compliment large patterns.

Decide on your focal point. If a piece of furniture is your focal point then try using an area rug with warm neutral colors that help to compliment your furniture and not stand out.

If however, you’d like the rug to be the point of focus, you should make sure the rug has a bold design or pattern, but only if the furniture’s color is solid and/or subdued. If the furniture’s colors are pronounced, the rug’s pattern can be of contrasting color to set it off differently from the furniture but the general color should still complement that of the furniture. The color will be the unifying element in the room’s decoration.

If your focal point is an area such as the fireplace you will be able to compliment the fireplace by adding a warm tone rug that can be placed in front of the fireplace. Avoid placing more than one focal color in a rug or area or you may find that one color will compete with the other, throwing off the balance of the room you was trying to create.

Other ideas in using rugs for decorating a room include:

1.) Light spacious feeling rooms can be achieved by using light colors and patterns. Warm areas can be achieved by using dark colors and patterns.

2.) Experiment with round, oblong, hexagonal and octagonal rug shapes. They may imbue flair and unique elegance to your space or room’s floor.

3.) Depending on the room’s general appearance, fringes on rugs can add an Oriental flair to a room. Be careful when vacuuming the fringe, though: do not use the vacuum brush or beater bar, both of which can damage the fringe fibers.

4.) Try using worn out rugs to create pillows for your sofa. Add some tassels on the corners in order to style it up.

5.) A colorful rug may also make a good wall decoration. Tack or nail it to the wall, or sew loops at a long edge, run a window rod through them, and attach the rod to a pair of window brackets. You will make only two holes in the wall and the rug will hang straighter also.

Decorating with rugs can give life to a dull room. Use the rugs to make a statement or to instantly change the look of a room.
