Adding Supplements To Saltwater Aquariums
Saltwater aquariums in comparison to freshwater ones need a lot more maintenance if you want to ensure that the tropical fish in yours remain healthy. You need to be aware that over time, certain nutrients and minerals which are found in the water can become depleted, and sometimes the only way to replenish these in saltwater aquariums is through adding supplements.
However, not all saltwater aquariums require supplements to be added to them. This is because they have been properly cared for and the correct maintenance procedures have been carried out by their owners. When you do own saltwater aquariums which contain the likes of Clownfish and Angelfish, then just regularly changing the water and doing the right sort of maintenance may mean you don’t need to add any supplements to it.
Just by changing some but not all of the water on a regular basis, is actually helping to replenish those lost nutrients and minerals. However, if you own saltwater aquariums which contain certain species of coral, then you will certainly be needing to add a calcium supplement to it.
Is Your Saltwater Aquariums In Need Of Supplements?
The quickest and easiest way of being able to determine what minerals and nutrients are missing from saltwater aquariums is to test the water. You can purchase home test kits from an online aquarium supply company or at your local tropical fish store. These then help to identify what is missing and just how much of each supplement you need to add to get them back up to their required levels.
You, however need to be careful when you start adding supplements to saltwater aquariums, as too much can cause problems and will be harmful to the tropical fish and marine life in the tank. The only real way to deal with too much of a supplement in an aquarium is to completely replace all the water, but this can prove very stressful on the aquatic life (plants, fish and coral) in it.
Saltwater Aquariums - Kinds Of Supplements That You May Need To Add
Discussions are still ongoing about whether adding supplements to saltwater aquariums is crucial. There are many aquarists who believe that just by changing some of the water in the tank regularly, helps to replenish those essential elements which have become depleted. This is certainly the case when it comes to owning saltwater aquariums which contain tropical fish or tropical fish with live rocks. As mentioned previously, if you own a reef tank with corals in it, then you need to add a calcium supplement. Also you may find that you need to add magnesium and Kalkwasser supplements to your coral reef saltwater aquariums as well.
Along with the calcium supplements in reef saltwater aquariums aiding the growth of corals, it is also beneficial with helping invertebrates and algae growth in such tanks as well. If you don’t, you may well find it difficult to get the right balance with your aquarium and it won’t help to provide the same kind of environment that the tropical fish and other marine life in the saltwater aquariums, would have had in their wild environment.
There are a number of different good quality calcium supplements which can be purchased and they come in either liquid or tablet form. These you can either get from a local aquarium supply company or from one of the many now online. Both tablets and liquid allow you to put the right amount of calcium into saltwater aquariums but the cost of the liquid, although easier to add, may be quite expensive. You may also need to add some bicarbonate or carbonate to the water in saltwater aquariums to prevent it from becoming acidic. If the level of alkalinity in saltwater aquariums falls below 2.5meg per one liter of water, then a Kalkwasser supplement will need to be introduced.
